FAQs
1. How do portable water filters work?
Portable water filters, such as the AquaHike Straw™ and AquaHike Flow™, use advanced filtration technology to remove impurities and contaminants from natural water sources. These filters typically consist of multiple layers, including activated carbon and a hollow fibre membrane, which work together to trap and eliminate bacteria, protozoa, and other harmful substances. When you drink water through the filter, it goes through these layers, ensuring that you have access to clean and safe drinking water.
2. Are portable water filters effective?
Yes, portable water filters are highly effective in removing contaminants and providing safe drinking water. AquaHike filters are designed to meet rigorous industry standards and have been tested to remove up to 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa. These filters are trusted by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide and are a reliable solution for accessing clean water in any natural water source.
3. Can I use portable water filters in any water source?
Portable water filters, such as the AquaHike Straw™ and AquaHike Flow™, are designed to provide a convenient and effective solution for accessing safe drinking water in non-salt natural water sources. However, it is important to note that portable water filters cannot filter everything.
While AquaHike filters are highly efficient in removing a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, protozoa, and larger particles, there may be other contaminants smaller than 0.1 microns that can pass through the filter. In some cases, additional filtration and purification methods may be required to ensure the water is safe for consumption, such as boiling water after filtration.
4. How long do portable water filters last?
The lifespan of a portable water filter depends on various factors, including the frequency of use and the quality of the water being filtered. On average, AquaHike filters can filter up to 5,000 litres of water before needing to be replaced. This makes them a cost-effective and long-lasting solution for accessing clean drinking water during your outdoor adventures.
5. How do I clean and maintain my portable water filter?
Proper maintenance and cleaning are essential to ensure the optimal performance of your portable water filter. After each use, it is recommended to clean the filters using the included backwash syringe or clean tap water. Shake any excess water out and leave to air dry. It is important to regularly do this after uses to maintain the longevity and effectiveness of your portable water filter.
6. What is the return and exchange policy?

AquaHike portable water filters can be used in a wide range of water sources, including rivers, lakes, streams, and even puddles. These filters are specifically designed to remove impurities and contaminants from natural water sources, making them suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and backpacking. However, it is important to note that portable water filters are not designed to remove chemicals or heavy metals from water.
9. Do portable water filters remove salt from salt water sources?
No, portable water filters are not designed to remove salt from saltwater sources. Most portable water filters, including our AquaHike Straw, are equipped to remove bacteria, parasites, and sediment from freshwater sources like rivers, lakes, and streams. Desalination, which is the process of removing salt from water, requires specialized equipment such as a reverse osmosis system or a dedicated desalination device. If you're in a situation where you need to purify saltwater for drinking, a portable water filter alone won't be sufficient.
